Internet Safety
After many weeks I am still chasing Malware/viruses on many of my customers computer systems.
The latest batch of problems appear to be coming from websites while using the internet for research (using Google, Yahoo, etc) Many customers fall victim and have Malware downloaded to their computers without being aware it has happened.
Please be extra cautious while using the internet as there have been several occassions where I have been able to disbale the Malware but at the cost of having to then format the hard drive and re-install windows. This has been necessary due to the damage done to the operating system (Windows) by the Malware.

How Time Flys
Well I am amazed how quickly time is passing, it seems like just yesterday that I published my last entry and it has actually been nearly a year.
I have been kept very busy removing Malware from computers and at one stage earlier in 2010 I was removing a "fake alert" Malware infection from a computer every day of the working week. The irony of this is that the media only recently became aware of the problem, three months after it all began, and then started warning everyone!
I have heard that several big websites were compromised including one of the big Australian motorsport websites. I also recently spoke to someone who advised their website had been compromised three times so they now change their password every two weeks to prevent further problems. Once a website is compromised just visiting it will downlaod the Malware to your own computer and this often results in a "fake alert" Malware infection.
The "fake alert" Malware reports that you have multiple files infected on your computer and encourages you to run a scan to fix the problems. Anything you do from this time on makes the problem worse, so my suggestion would be that you turn off your computer and seek professional help.
Windows 7 is finally being accepted by the mainstream public and business markets so I have recently been busy installing new computers for customers and transferring data and email from the old computers to the new ones. All this work gets in the way of leisure but I will be enjoying some leisure time in the near future. As always if you think I can help you in anyway, please feel free to drop me a line.

Viruses/Malware Continue To Be A Major Problem
Viruses and Malware are still proving to be the main thing taking up my time.
For a month or two now, I have been getting many more calls than usuall from people whose computers have been compromised by Viruses or Malware. These programs can be from an email, a website or from other unknown sources. Many people are being fooled by the social engineering in the programs and actually install the program thinking it will help solve a problem (a problem that they do not actually have) These types of programs are known as "Fake Alerts" as they are falsley warning you of problems in your computer that simply do not exist.
Unfortunately these programs have managed to get past all of the major and minor brands of anti-virus software and the damage caused can often take several hours to clean up. The worst of the viruses make changes to the registry to try and prevent you from removing the "fake alert" program.
Stay alert and if you suspect your computer may have been compromised by a Virus or Malware please feel free to call me.
